YIELD NOT TO TEMPTATION, or a Promise to Mother

With Peace, Prosperity, and Liberty enslaved by the BEAST SECESSION, two brothers join in the fight to restore the Union. Before leaving home, they pledge to avoid temptations, and be good Christian boys.

Once in camp, however, a trip to the store of Sutler B. Good proves the downfall of one of the two brothers. He quickly succumbs to bad company and bad drink. The other brother shrinks back in horror from the dreadful temptation of alcohol.

Continuing his descent into oblivion, the boy now finds himself at the losing end of gambling. He ignores the pleas of his brother who tries to remind him of the promise made to mother.

In an act of desperation, and in order to pay his gambling debts, the boy commits robbery.

By now, alcohol has clouded the reasoning of the young boy. He returns to the camp and murders Sutler B. Good in cold blood.

The final tragic end. Alcohol has led the poor boy to the gallows. If only he'd kept his promise to mother to YIELD NOT TO TEMPTATION!
